As a Canadian, I can admit that we often get infatuated by the novelty of things that are exclusive to the United States.
My personal American obsession of 2024? Trader Joes.
Does caring so much about a grocery store mean I'm officially middle-aged and washed... maybe, but that's for a different newsletter.
But then I started to research, and realized that TJ's has a cult following outside of just Canadians hopping the border. Here's two ways they've managed to stand out in one of the most commoditized markets out there ๐
On Friday, I chatted with a competitor in our space.
*GAASSSSPPP* now why on earth would you do that, Adam?!?
Well, two reasons:
1. Contrary to popular belief, your competitors aren't actually evil.
2. You learn a lot!
In fact, within a thirty minute chat I learned:
How they differentiate against one of the bigger competitors in the space
How they perceive Klue as a new, larger entrant into the win-loss category
The biggest pain points they've heard buyers have with the big competitor.
If you get a chance to talk with someone working in your category, especially if they're an adjacent competitor that you're not seeing in every single deal, do it. Do it now.
